Clean Up beats rain, busts rubbish

Stormwater Shepherds and volunteers collected rubbish in Petrie Creek on Saturday (11 September) to prevent it washing into the ocean.
Supported by Sunshine Coast Council and Petrie Creek Catchment Care Group, the clean up was held at Quota Park, Nambour and timed to beat seasonal rains.
Stormwater Shepherds spokesperson Mary Rayner said each year the planet lost over 100,000 aquatic animals and over 1million birds from ingestion and entanglement from our plastic pollution.
“One of the worse polluters is stormwater, conveying plastic and urban pollution to waterways, like Petrie Creek,” she said.
“We have already removed over 2000 items of rubbish from Petrie Creek and surrounding creek banks in a previous clean up in May this year. We will expect to remove double this amount in the upcoming clean up. But we need help from the Nambour Community,” said Ms Rayner.
